Throw down a single redstone dust and a feather. Activate the circle and now no mobs can enter it. It also lasts indefinitely until you deactivate it.

Your handy brewing book will be of great use here and you can brew many different potions that can grow random trees, cause temporary darkness, or even spawn owl minions to attack your enemies.
